I once had a friend at work show me that you can take dried sorghum grains and cook them in a pot on the stove with a lid, in a similar fashion to how you would cook stovetop popcorn at home. The resulting product looks like “baby popcorn”, and is definitively the most adorable popcorn you have ever seen in your life.
Homemade Baby Popcorn (Popped Sorghum)
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup dried sorghum
- 1.5 tsp vegetable oil
- Melted butter ( to taste)
- White granulated sugar ( to taste)
- Salt ( to taste)
Instructions
- Place a medium-sized soup pot on high heat until hot.
- Add vegetable oil to very lightly coat the bottom of the pot.
- Add the sorghum and shake the pan to coat the kernels in the hot oil until they first begin to pop.
- Place lid on pot to avoid popping kernels from flying out of the pot.
- Shake pan continuously over heat until you don’t hear many more kernels popping.
- Remove from heat and discard grains that have not popped. Alternatively, you can save them and eat them as a crunchy salad topping.
- Coat popped sorghum in a small amount of melted butter, a pinch of sugar, and a pinch of salt and enjoy.
