I love buying frozen puff pastry from the grocery store, as it can be taken out of the
freezer and thawed easily whenever you are in need of a quick snack or meal. You
can use the pastry sheet circles or rectangles whole, or cut them into smaller
sections to make some individual appetizers.
In this easy appetizer recipe, the puff pastry sheets are cut into squares, placed into
muffin tins, topped with a filling consisting of onions, celery, apples, and Brie
cheese, and then baked!
The resulting pastries are delicious, and can be served hot or at room temperature.
The following recipe makes about twelve filled puff pastries.
Puff Pastry Bites with Bacon, Apple, and Brie Cheese
Ingredients
- 8 slices bacon
- 1 white onion (cut medium dice)
- 1 stalk celery (cut small dice)
- ½ tsp Kosher salt
- 2 Granny Smith apples (peeled and cut medium dice)
- 1 whole egg (whisked)
- ¼ tsp freshly-ground black pepper
- ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 rectangular sheet puff pastry (cut into 8 pieces)
- 1 muffin tin (lightly greased)
- 12 oz Brie cheese (cut into bite-sized pieces)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 360˚F.
- Add the bacon slices to a large sauté pan, and cook until crispy.
- When the bacon is cooked, remove it from the pan, and allow the slices to drain on paper towels.
- Add the diced white onion and celery to the pan with the bacon fat, and allow the vegetables to cook for roughly five minutes while stirring.
- Add the Kosher salt, and diced apples, and cook for an additional two minutes.
- Remove the mixture from the heat, and allow it to cool for a few minutes.
- Add the whisked egg, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
- Lightly grease the insides of a muffin tin.
- Cut two puff pastry sheets into 12 squares.
- Add the puff pastry squares to the muffin tin by gently pressing them down inside the circular muffin indentations.
- Distribute the apple, onion, celery and egg mixture among the 12 cups, along with the pieces of Brie cheese.
- Fold the edges of the puff pastry up to wrap the contents partially in the puff pastry.
- Bake at 360˚F for roughly 14-17 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden-brown.
- Remove from the oven, and allow to cool for three minutes.
- Carefully remove the baked pastries from the muffin tin, and serve warm.
