Bring your napkins to dinner, folks, and don’t wear white. This is a saucy, hearty, and satisfying sandwich. It’s budget-friendly and goes together very quickly. Better still, you can freeze some for when unexpected company arrives.
Because you’re creating your own sauce here, you can play with flavors. For example, add some taco or chili seasoning. Other ideas include:
- Cheese: Put cheese on top of the meat in the roll or bread.
- Fries: If you’re making loaded fries, why not add one more level?
- Potato power: Add the sauce to a loaded baked potato.
- Lasagna: Trade out your usual sauce for this one.
- Hot dogs: No matter how you spice it, the sauce could work for “chili” dogs.
- Pumped-up Pizza: Slather over the top of pizza dough, topped with mozzarella.
- Spaghetti: Use this as your sauce, or add it to store-bought for more oomph.

Saucy Sandwich
Ingredients
(makes 4 sandwiches)
- 1 white onion (chopped fine)
- ½ sweet pepper (remove seeds and dice)
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 ½ tsp stone ground mustard
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 15 oz can tomato sauce (Italian herb is nice)
- 1 lb 90% lean ground beef
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp pepper
- ¼ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
- 3 cloves garlic (finely minced)
- 3 garlic cloves (minced)
- 4 Kaiser rolls
Instructions
- Prep both the onion and green pepper.
- Mix the Worcestershire, mustard, sugar, and sauce together.
- Fry the ground beef in oil until it cooks through. Don’t let it clump (you want small pieces).
- In a bowl, combine the Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, and tomato sauce.
- Add salt, pepper, onions, and peppers. Cook until the vegetables are tender.
- Now comes the garlic, sizzled for a few seconds, followed by the sauce.
- Bring the mixture to a low boil.
- Reduce the temperature to simmer for 15 minutes (uncovered).
- If it’s not saucy enough, you can add a little water or more sauce.
- Grill the Kaiser rolls (this keeps them from getting mushy).
- Put ¼ of the blend on each roll and enjoy.
