The New York Times recently published an article focused on the declining availability of Green Chartreuse worldwide. This incredible herbal liqueur was created around 1605. The recipe for Green Chartreuse is said to include over 130 ingredients, and it has been produced in the French alps for the past two centuries by a group of incredibly talented monks.
The recent decline in availability arises from demand being higher than the supply of Chartreuse that the monks are comfortable producing. Some restaurants in the United States are currently having problems sourcing enough Green Chartreuse for their cocktail programs!
In any event, the liqueur is truly unique, with a distinctly complex flavor profile—grab some if you can find it, and try some cocktail experiments at home.
The following recipe includes a mixture of Old Overholt Rye Whiskey, Green Chartreuse, and Apple Brandy, along with a bit of simple syrup.
