shop with a charming red/white checkered motif. The smell of fresh burgers hangs in the air, and at the counter, several people have different takes on sundaes.
So, how did this yummy tradition begin? Well, three people claim to be the creators of the dish. First is Edward Berners in 1881. He used chocolate soda syrup to comply with blue laws on ice cream. He only sold it on Sundays.
Next is Chester Platt from Ithaca, NY. Platt topped ice cream with cherries and cherry syrup. He created it on Sunday. But he didn’t want to offend anyone by using the day of the week, so he changed the spelling.
Third is the pharmacist Charles Sonntag. In a neat twist, Sonntag’s name is German and translates to “Sunday.” It started as Sunday, but eventually was spelled “sundae.”
No matter how it came to be, ice cream lovers around the world are grateful. So, how about making some unique concoctions, starting with a charred pineapple sundae?
