Fried Mortadella Sandwich with Melted Edam Cheese, Shredded Lettuce, and Pickles

As the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter, I find myself craving more hot sandwiches with melted cheese.

This simple fried mortadella sandwich is griddled on both sides in a pan with no added fat, topped with melty Edam cheese, and served up on a toasted sesame seed bun with lettuce and pickles. It’s an easy and delicious hot sandwich to make for lunch or dinner in less than 10 minutes.

The following recipe makes one tasty sandwich.

Fried Mortadella Sandwich with Melted Edam Cheese, Shredded Lettuce, and Pickles

As the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter, I find myself craving more hot sandwiches with melted cheese.
This simple fried mortadella sandwich is griddled on both sides in a pan with no added fat, topped with melty Edam cheese, and served up on a toasted sesame seed bun with lettuce and pickles. It’s an easy and delicious hot sandwich to make for lunch or dinner in less than 10 minutes.
The following recipe makes one tasty sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp salted butter
  • 1 large-sized sesame seed burger bun
  • 5-6 thin slices of Mortadella (about 3-4 oz, or roughly ¼ pound.)
  • 2 slices Edam cheese (or Gouda cheese)
  • 3 Bread & Butter pickle slices
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • ½ cup romaine lettuce (very finely shredded)
  • A few grinds of fresh black pepper

Instructions 

  • Melt the salted butter in a medium-sized nonstick pan over medium heat.
  • Toast the insides of both buns in the pan with the hot melted butter until golden brown, or about 5 minutes.
  • *If you are toasting the buns using higher heat, this step can be completed in about 20-30 seconds. I like to take my time and let the bun reach a consistent golden-brown color. For a more even color distribution, try moving the buns around in the pan as they cook.
  • While the buns are toasting, heat up a small nonstick pan with no added fat.
  • Add the mortadella slices in a burger-sized pile to the dry hot pan, and fry the mortadella over medium-high heat until brown on the bottom side.
  • While the pile of mortadella is frying in the pan, cut your shredded lettuce as finely as possible.
  • After the mortadella has gotten color and fried up nicely on the first side, flip it over gently.
  • Quickly add the two slices of Edam cheese.
  • Cover the pan with a lid, and wait for about three minutes to allow the cheese to melt fully.
  • Remove the toasted buns from the pan and begin to assemble the sandwiches.
  • Add the fried mortadella with melted Edam cheese to the bottom bun, followed by the Bread & Butter pickle slices, the mayonnaise, the shredded lettuce, and some freshly-ground black pepper.
  • Add the top bun, and cut the sandwich in half using a very sharp knife.
  • Serve hot, with extra napkins.

Notes

Edam cheese is a semi-hard cheese from the Netherlands that melts wonderfully. You can substitute the Edam cheese for something like Gouda or sliced provolone.
You can add a splash of sherry vinegar to the shredded lettuce for a bit of added brightness.
