The variety of BBQ sauces found regionally throughout the U.S. is staggering. Each one is different in terms of ingredients and preparation method. This Northern Alabama-Style White BBQ sauce is mayonnaise-based, hence the name. It is one of the classic BBQ sauce variations that is absolutely worth creating at home. And you don’t even need to turn on your stove or dirty up a sauce pot.
Try serving this sauce with grilled or smoked chicken.

Northern Alabama-Style White BBQ Sauce
Ingredients
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Juice from ½ lemon
- 1 tsp Tabasco sauce
- 1 Tbsp brown sugar
- ¼ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp ground cayenne pepper
- ¼ tsp freshly-ground black pepper
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 2 cups mayonnaise
- 3 Tbsp prepared horseradish
- 1 Tbsp spicy brown mustard
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and Tabasco sauce with the 1 Tbsp brown sugar, until the brown sugar has dissolved in the liquid.
- Whisk in the onion powder, garlic powder, ground cayenne pepper, freshly-ground black pepper, and kosher salt.
- Fully mix and incorporate the 2 cups mayonnaise, 3 Tbsp prepared horseradish, and 1 Tbsp spicy brown mustard into the liquid mixture, using a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
- Continue to combine until the mixture is homogenous and all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with kosher salt and freshly-ground black pepper, if desired.
- Cover and chill the sauce in the fridge for whenever you are ready to use it.
- Serve over grilled chicken.
Notes
This sauce will keep great covered in the fridge for up to a week.
