Steamed Salmon with Spicy Broccoli

This tasty fish entree features fresh salmon steamed with ginger, garlic, and scallions, served with spicy sauteed broccoli. The dish is healthy and delicious, and can be made in under thirty minutes!

The following recipe serves four people, with four standard-sized salmon fillets.

Steamed Salmon with Spicy Broccoli

This tasty fish entree features fresh salmon steamed with ginger, garlic, and scallions, served with spicy sauteed broccoli. The dish is healthy and delicious, and can be made in under thirty minutes!
The following recipe serves four people, with four standard-sized salmon fillets.

Ingredients

  • 4 5- oz fresh salmon fillets (cleaned and skin removed)
  • 1 tsp Kosher salt
  • 3 scallions (finely sliced)
  • 3 cloves garlic (finely sliced)
  • 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger (peeled and finely minced)
  • 2 Tbsp sunflower seed oil (for coating the salmon)
  • 1 head of broccoli (broken into bite-sized florets)
  • 3 Tbsp sunflower seed oil (for cooking the broccoli)
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tsp Sichuan peppercorns
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce (or more to taste)

Instructions 

  • Preheat the oven to 375˚F.
  • Clean the salmon fillets, and remove the pin bones and skin.
  • Salt the salmon on all sides with a light layer of Kosher salt, and place the salmon on a parchment-lined sheet tray.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the sliced scallions, garlic, and minced ginger with two Tablespoons of sunflower seed oil.
  • Rub the mixture to coat the salmon fillets on all sides.
  • Cover the salmon on the parchment with a second sheet of parchment paper, and try to gently fold the edges of the two pieces of parchment paper together to sandwich the salmon and aromatics between the two layers of parchment.
  • Cook the salmon and aromatics in the oven at 375˚F for roughly 15 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through.
  • While the salmon is in the oven, combine your broccoli florets in a large mixing bowl with some sunflower seed oil, red pepper flakes, and Sichuan peppercorns.
  • Add the broccoli to a large sauté pan over medium-high heat.
  • Cook while stirring for about eight minutes, or until the broccoli is mostly tender.
  • Turn off the heat, and add the sesame oil and soy sauce to the broccoli.
  • Toss the broccoli to combine, and set it aside.
  • When the salmon is done steaming, remove it from the oven.
  • Serve the cooked salmon fillets on plates with the aromatics that they steamed with, along with some of the spicy broccoli.

Notes

If it’s easier for you, feel free to cook the salmon fillets with their skins on, and gently remove the skin after the fillets are done steaming in the oven.
You can chill any leftover salmon and broccoli in the fridge, and serve it on a salad the following day for lunch.
